Anime Review: "Sailor Moon Crystal" Episode 9

I'm still behind, but eh, it's not like I'm been in a rush to actually watch this. Watched today while doing cardio on a bike.

Big reveal: Usagi is Princess Serenity and Mamoru is Endymion. Usagi's tear becomes the Crystal and she uses it to keep Mamoru alive, but he is then stolen away by Queen Beryl. We then learn about everyone's past lives (Earth and Moon kingdoms, forbidden lovers, and a war; you know the story). The Senshi then decide to visit the moon for possible answers.

Serenity's dress top defies physics. LOOK MA, SUDDENLY C-CUPS.

Visually, this was one of the better episodes. Not as good as four but had an overall improvement. That is, until the second half (which takes place mostly in Usagi's bedroom) where it looked like crap again. *sigh* But before that point the animation was passable, though there were a lot of extreme closeups (so many HUGE eyes) and awkward poses/bodies. The attacks looked great though.

Get ready to get wet.

The rushed feeling is still there, though the pace was better. What didn't flow well was the time between the fight and the Senshi going to meet Usagi. It's kind of (but not really) spoken as if at least several days has passed, but the pace is so broken it feels as if its only been one day. Character development is focused exclusively on Usagi, building to her declaring she will not longer be a "helpless princess." Cool, now can we have less crying, please?

So what's the overall judgement? Its one of the better episodes and actually tells a story, yet I'm still unimpressed.

OHCRAP, I forgot to flush the toilet!!

THE GOGGLES, THEY DO NOTHING!

You can watch all the episodes streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, NeonAlley, or NicoNico. Or if the original 90's is more your thing, you can watch it at Hulu (with two more episodes every Monday).
